Yes, I love my dog Peter very much. I wrote a book about him; my apartment walls are covered in portraits of his face; I own several t-shirts displaying his name and countenance. That I am so obsessed should not, however, discount the impartial and correct opinion I hold that you are about to read, which is: Valentine’s Day should be not only a day to celebrate our human loves, but our canine loves as well. Caring for a dog is proven to make us less stressed, happier, and healthier, and having them by our side can help us feel less isolated, and give us a sense of purpose. They deserve celebration as much as anyone.
But how do I do that, you’re wondering, without seeming … indecent? … perverse? … obscene?! It’s fine. As my Valentine’s Day gift to you, I will share with you some ways to celebrate Dog Valentine’s Day, with the help of Dr. Sarah-Elizabeth Byosiere, who is the director of the Thinking Dog Center at Hunter College and a woman you should feel safe trusting even if you are wary of me.
