In an awards season like no other, with few films in actual theaters and with no red carpet events to build buzz, it’s harder than ever to predict who might walk home with Oscar gold when this year’s pandemic-delayed ceremony finally takes place on April 25.
Into this void stepped the Golden Globes last night, itself delayed a month by COVID-19 protocols, to possibly give some clarity to the 2021 Oscar race. The Globes have often been an unreliable predictor of what will happen on Oscar night—particularly when it comes to the best-picture award—but given the absence this year of the typical tea leaves, including box office grosses and the Monday morning quarterbacking that often follows the weekend release of a high-profile production, the Globes may have taken on an outsized role in building momentum for this year’s major Oscar contenders.
